About Sanket Sargar
Sanket Sargar was selected to represent India through trials at NIS Patiala in the month of October. Sanket comes from Sangli in Maharashtra, where weightlifting is a strong traditional sport.
He is the champion of Khelo India Youth Games 2020 and also holds the national records (Snatch 108kg, Clean & Jerk 139kg and Total 244kg) in the 55kg category. He started his training with coach Sourav Niyogi in 2013 when he was only 13 years old. His father runs a paan and food shop in the state and Sanket also helps him.

Sanket Mahadev Sargar, 21, is a history student at Kolhapur’s Shivaji University. He is the champion of Khelo India University Games 2020.
Commonwealth Games 2022
Sanket Sargar had a great start. Sanket stood first in the snatch event with a lift of 113 kg. He then followed it up with a stellar performance in the clean and jerk, where he lifted 135 kg in his first attempt and then failed in both his attempts at 139 kg.
He lifted a total of 248 kg. During one of his last attempts, Sargar got injured due to which he could not lift much weight and trailed his opponent by just 1 kilogram.
Could not win gold due to injury
Sanket was a strong contender for gold in the 55kg category. But due to injury in the second attempt of clean and jerk, he could not succeed in his third attempt and missed out on the gold medal by being just 1 kilogram behind. This was the reason that he had to come to the medal ceremony with a bandage on his hand.
Speaking after the medal ceremony, Sanket said, “I would like to dedicate my medal to the freedom fighters of India, I was almost in tears as I could not win the gold medal. 5 years of hard work helped me win the medal. Everyone coming home to Sangli will be happy, when I used to see my father, I used to feel that our life is changing. A little disappointed for missing the sleep. ,
